KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Sun Devil women's tennis team wrapped up the three day Tennessee Fall Invitational on a high note, splitting the six singles matches with Ohio State and defeating Wake Forest in doubles on Sunday afternoon.
Each of the three singles victories by the Devils were against ranked Buckeyes as well.
"I thought we rebounded well today and played our best tennis of the weekend," said head coach Sheila McInerney. "We stressed finishing strong and we did that today. Kassidy, Sammi and Savannah played really solid, tough tennis to pull out hard fought three-set wins.
"We improved our play today overall even in the singles matches we lost."
Kassidy Jump, ranked No. 87 in the preseason ITA rankings, rallied in the final two sets to defeat No. 79 Gabriella De Santis, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0. It marked her second win over a higher ranked opponent on the weekend, as she defeated No. 35 Sadie Hammond of Tennessee on Friday.
On court two, sophomore Sammi Hampton – who played a majority of her freshman season on court five – held her own again on Sunday. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, Hampton came back like Jump to defeat No. 68 Anna Sanford in the final two sets, 7-5, 6-1. Hampton finished the weekend 2-1 on the second court.
The final victory for the Devils in singles came behind the racket of the freshman Savannah Slaysman on court six. She upset No. 80 Olivia Sneed, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4). She would also go 2-1 on the weekend.
In doubles, McInerney again mixed up her pairs, but this time shifted the pairs on different courts.
Jump and Hampton earned their second win of the weekend, defeating Samantha Asch and Courtney Meredith, 6-4.
On court one, Slaysman and junior partner Kelley Anderson had the upset of the day, knocking off No. 22 Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko, 6-3. This new pair assembled by McInerney went undefeated on the weekend, 4-0.
"The doubles were solid today, winning two of the three," said McInerney. "All in all, it was a great weekend of tennis against three quality teams, and it gives us a good barometer of where we are and what we need to improve on."
The women return to action on Friday, Nov. 4 for the start of the three-day ASU Thunderbird Invitational at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
