KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- After head coach Sheila McInerney stated she'd like to see more aggressive play in doubles, the Sun Devil women's tennis team answered her challenge, taking four of six matches against the University of Tennesee on Saturday afternoon.
Other than the duo of senior Kassidy Jump and sophomore Sammi Hampton, McInerney again mixed up all the women with different partners at the Tennesee Fall Invitational, attempting to find a match with three new faces on the roster.
"I thought we played very well today in doubles and improved from yesterday, which was good," said McInerney. "Singles was a bit disappointing, as we were not as resilient as we needed to be. Credit to Wake Forest, as they were extremely tough today and made very few unforced errors."
In doubles, Jump and Hampton defeated Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck on court two for the only victory of their two matches. In the second round, the duo played on court one against Eve Repic and Brittany Lindl, falling 6-2.
The first round featured Pac-12 Champion Alex Osborne paired up with junior transfer Nicole Fossa Huergo on court one, as they also fell to Repic and Lindl by a score of 6-2. Hey would split up in the second round, as Osborne played with senior Gussie O'Sullivan on court three, defeating Ashley Bongart and Kim Kermet, 6-3.
Freshman Savannah Slaysman and other junior transfer Kelley Anderson paired up for the day, winning both matches by a score of 6-2.
As McInerney eluded to, singles didn't go as well as they did on day one.
Jump, ranked No. 87 in the preseason rankings, lost a hard-fought battle with No. 47 Kimmy Guerin, 7-6(5), 6-3. Hampton returned to court two for the second straight day after an impressive performance on Friday. This time she would face her first ranked opponent of her collegiate career in No. 76 Emma Davis. Davis would win in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
The only singles victory for the Devils came from the racket of O'Sullivan, who defeated Luisa Fernandez of Wake Forest, 6-3, 6-4.
The third and final day of the invite will feature doubles at 10 a.m. EST against Wake Forest, followed by singles against Ohio State at 1 p.m. EST.
