KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – On day one of the Tennessee Fall Invitational, the Sun Devil women took two of the six doubles matches with likely preseason top-25 Ohio State and won four of six singles matches against the Lady Volunteers on Friday afternoon.
"Overall I thought we played and competed pretty well today," said 2016 Pac-12 Coach of the Year Sheila McInerney. "While we lost more doubles matches than we won, we had two really close ones that could have gone either way. We shot ourselves in the foot with untimely, unforce errors."
The round robin format provides all four teams – Tennessee, Wake Forest, Ohio State and the Devils – with preparation for the regular season format come January.
"It was good to play a six-game set, which we will do during the season," said McInerney. "Short sets are very unforgiving if you make unforced errors. Hopefully we will clean that up tomorrow."
In singles, No. 87 Kassidy Jump took care of business in his first official match on court one. Jump drew No. 35 Sadie Hammond of Tennessee, and won the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Sophomore Sammi Hampton, who played on court five in 2015-16, moved to court two on Friday and also won in straight sets. She defeated Eve Repic, 6-1, 6-4.
In her first official match wearing the maroon and gold, junior transfer Nicole Fossa Huergo defeated Kim Kermet on court four, 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-1. Fellow junior transfer Kelley Anderson played on court three, and fell to Brittany Lindl in two hard-fought sets, 7-5, 6-2.
Freshman Savannah Slaysman defeated Ashley Bongart on court six, taking the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
Earlier in the afternoon, McInerney displayed a few different options in doubles partners. While Hampton and Jump remain the ying-and-yang duo, returning Pac-12 Champion Alex Osborne took the court with a new partner this week in Fossa Huergo. In their first match, they defeated Sanford and Angeles Paz of Ohio State, 7-6(7). The Buckeyes would change things up in their second round, as Sanford would pair up with Sneed to defeat Osborne and Fossa Huergo this time in a tiebreak, 7-6(2).
Slaysman paired up with Anderson for the Devils as the other new shake up in doubles, and they would win their one match against Ohio State, defeating Kowase and Ballinger 6-4. In round two, Anderson would pair up with O'Sullivan with a different outcome, falling 6-0 to Niehaus and Ballinger.
Day two on Saturday will feature a rematch with Tennessee, but this time in doubles at 1 p.m. EST. They will follow that up with singles against Wake Forest at 2 p.m. EST. Live updates can be followed here.
