BOSTON, Mass. -- After finishing the final 40 minutes of Friday's game with momentum, the Sun Devil hockey team rolled that into a 1-0 lead over No. 17 Northeastern early in the 1st period at Matthews Arena.
Despite getting up early on the Huskies (3-1-2), the Devils would eventually fall 6-1 after Northeastern rallied for three goals to end the first period and never looked back.
"We generated some really good scoring chances and they're goalie played really well," said head coach Greg Powers. "We have to capitalize. We could have had three or four after two, and if we do, it's a completely different game."
Graduate transfer Robbie Baillargeon put ASU up early, recording his third goal of the series and sixth goal against the Huskies in eight career meetings. That would be the first and only lead of the series for the Devils, as the Huskies rattled off six-straight goals to end the night.
It all started with a highly questionable interference call against birthday boy Wade Murphy, which led to a Northeastern game-tying, power-play goal. While the game was still only tied, the momentum and energy swayed to the home team.
A shot by the Huskie's leading goal scorer, Zach Aston-Reese, deflected off the pads of senior goaltender Robert Levin and right to the stick of Nolan Stevens for the go-ahead goal. Just over a minute later, a turnover in the defensive zone led to a 2-on-1 rush with Garret Cockerill snapping a wrister blocker side.
"That team is just really good," said Powers. "Our team just ran out of gas there in the last period. There are things we can take from that series and learn from. We're going to take the positives out of it -- we felt last night was a winnable game and tonight they just beat us."
Three more goals were added by Northeastern -- one in the second and two in the third period. The Devils developed several good opportunities throughout the night, but for the second straight night, Husky goaltender Ryan Ruck stood on his head for 21 saves on 22 shots.
ASU will return home for the next two weekends, as they host No. 13 Harvard on Oct. 28-29 and No. 11 Michigan on Nov. 4. The first game against Harvard and the single game against the Wolverines will be hosted at Gila River Arena in Glendale -- the final two of the season on the west side.
"We're at home for two weeks and we're going to enjoy it," said Powers. "This home stand we have coming up with Harvard and Michigan is a great opportunity for us to get a couple of big home wins against two great programs. We're going to show up to win like we do every other series."
Friday's puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network in Glendale, while Saturday's will be streamed on Twitter Live via the Pac-12 Network. Tickets are still available here.
