Colorado Springs, Colo. - Before officially ever swimming a stroke for ASU, freshman Cameron Craig is making a splash as he was recently named to the USA Swimming National Junior Team.

Selection to the National Junior Team is based on times in Olympic events from the combined results of all USA Swimming and FINA sanctioned meets. His success at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Maui from Aug. 24-27 qualified Craig for this selection.

In Maui, Craig finished first in the 4x100m freestyle and medley relays and second in the 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle, and 100m butterfly.

His second place finish in the 100 back was a lifetime best (54.74), while his 49.45 100 free to qualify for finals also set a lifetime best. Craig is in the top 75 in the world for the 100 Back and 100 Fly.

Craig is one of just 65 swimmers on the National Junior Team and one of just five to earn National Junior Team status in a team-high three events (100 free, 100 back, 100 fly).

The Monroe, Mich. native was the 2016 D1 Swimmer of the Year, holding the D1 and state records in 100 Back, 200 IM, and 100 Free. He also earned 2016 state championships in the 100 Back and 200 IM and a 2014 state championship in the 100 Fly.

ASU's season gets underway in just under a month with the annual intrasquad meet at 3 p.m. on Oct. 7 at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

The Sun Devils turn to the road for the next two, at Utah on Oct. 22 and at BYU on Oct. 22, before returning home for their regular season home opener vs. Denver on Oct. 29.
