TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State's Zahid Valencia is set to compete at the Junior World Championships on Sunday, Sept. 4 in Macon, France.

The U.S. will send three teams of the nation's best 17-20 year old wrestlers to France including a Greco-Roman, women's freestyle, and men's freestyle team. Valencia will be part of the eight-member men's freestyle team that competes Sept. 3-4.

Valencia returns to Junior World Championships and looks for improvement, namely a medal, after a 10th place finish in 2015. Earlier this summer, he competed internationally at the Grand Prix of Spain.

The men's freestyle 84 kg preliminaries will be 10 a.m. Macon time (1 a.m. Tempe time) and the finals will take place at 6 p.m. in France (9 a.m. Tempe time).

Valencia earned a place on the Junior World Team with a best-of-three 84 kg finals win over Penn State's Bo Nickal, the 2016 NCAA runner-up, in May in Irving, Texas.
