ROME, Italy -- Arizona State junior Katarina Simonovic qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics in the 200-meter freestyle for her home country of Serbia on Sunday at the 2016 Settecolli Trophy.
Simonovic met the Olympic qualifying standard in the event with a time of 1:58.87, which just beat the standard of 1:58.96. It was her first time swimming a sub-2 minute time in a competitive event.
Her previous fastest time in the event was a 2:01.54 at the 2015 Art Adamson Invitational hosted by Texas A&M at the beginning of her junior season.
Earlier in her junior year, Simonovic finished 10th at the Pac-12 Championships in the 200-yard freestyle.
The 2016 Rio Olympics begin August 5 and the 200-meter freestyle heats will be swam on Monday, August 8.
Simonovic will enter her senior year in 2016-17 as a student in the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication.
