TEMPE, Ariz. -- On Tuesday, the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-Americans were announced at the 2016 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship being held at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
Freshman Linnea Strom was one of the 11 golfers who earned First-Team All-American honors while junior Monica Vaughn was named Second-Team All-American. The two become the 75th and 76th All-American selections in ASU program history.
It also becomes the first time since 2010 that two Sun Devils have earned second-team honors or better in the same season.
Strom had a remarkable rookie season, earning a trip to the NCAA Championships as an individual, winning the Pac-12 Individual Championship while setting the 54-hole championship record with an 11-under 205, and recording seven top-10 finishes in her 11 tournaments. The Sweden native becomes the first freshman to earn First-Team All-American honors since Jennifer Johnson in 2010.
The Second-Team honor becomes Vaughn's second-straight All-American honor after being named a First-Team All-American in 2015. The junior also had seven top-10 finishes on the season, while also picking up her first outright tournament victory of her career at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in February.
Both will return for the Sun Devils for the 2016-17 season.
The criteria used to determine the WGCA All-American Teams include:
- Head-to-head competition
- Comparison with common opponents
- Scoring average
- Place finishes in regular season events and tournament wins
- Strength of schedule
