EUGENE, Ore. – Arizona State freshman Linnea Strom is right where she needs to be after day one of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships on Friday.

The rookie from Sweden shot an even par 72 at the 6,331-yard Eugene Country Club, where she currently sits in a tie for 29th place and four shots off the lead. She is also tied for 6th out of the 12 individuals. The individual field will be cut down to nine after Sunday's third round.

"Linnea played a solid round of golf today," said head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. "She putted well and struck the ball well. We learned a lot more about the course today and look forward to tomorrow. Linnea is in a good position after the first day."

Strom, who teed off the 10th hole, parred 12 of her holes while adding on three birdies and three bogeys. She finished the back nine at 2-under par with two birdies on two par-5's. Of the four par-5's on the course, Strom birdied three of them with a bogey on the 7th.

The weather in Eugene stayed dry through round one with a high of 61 degrees and cloudy throughout the day. The forecast shows likely the same for Saturday's second round, with the rain predicted to hit Sunday and Monday for rounds three and four.

"Eugene Country Club is a great golf course and a test for good players," said Farr-Kaye. "Linnea is very comfortable in this type of weather. It is cool and cloudy but not much wind."

On Saturday, Strom is slotted to go off the first tee at 8:25 a.m. PT.
