TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State volleyball team and Director of Volleyball Stevie Mussie announced on Monday that American University transfer Carmen Unzue will join the Sun Devils in 2016.
"We're beyond excited for Carmen to join the Sun Devil family," Mussie said. "Having been named the 2015 Rookie of the Year in the Patriot League, Best Blocker in Spain in 2015, and MVP of the Spanish Championships in 2014, she understands what it means to compete at a high level and we look forward to her bringing her talents to the valley."
Unzue, a 6-2 middle blocker from Madrid, Spain, played in 31 matches in 2015, where she posted 142 kills and 77 blocks. The 2015 Patriot League Champions, Unzue and the Eagles advanced to their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance after going 16-0 in conference play.
"Throughout this summer she will train with her national team in preparation for the upcoming season," Mussie added. "We believe that this will further prepare her for everything that awaits her in the Pac-12 season."
She is currently training with the Spanish Women's National Team, which will take on friendly matches against Hungary from May 25-29, and will compete in a pair of European League tournaments this coming June.
A 2015 graduate of the Colegio Nuestra Senora del Reuerdo in Madrid, Unzue was the U18 Spanish Championship MVP in 2014. That year, she was also named the U18s Best Blocker of Madrid, while in 2013 she was named Best Player and Best Attacker of Madrid.
The daughter of Jaime and Belen Unzue, Carmen has one brother, Jamie. She intends to major in biology with a minor in nursing at Arizona State.
