TEMPE -- The Arizona State women's golf team tees off at University Club in Baton Rouge, La. on Thursday, May 5 for one of the four NCAA Regional tournaments.
As the third seed, the No. 10 Sun Devils join a field that consists of No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Florida, No. 13 Washington, No. 20 Oregon, No. 24 South Carolina and 12 other programs. The low six teams and low three individuals not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. from May 20-25.
"We have been working hard to prepare for the regional championship while also completing final exams for the spring term," said head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. "This is the first time for all of us to visit Baton Rouge and we can't wait. I am pleased with how our team has played this spring. We have fought hard to get to this point in the year and I know we will continue that spirit and determination as we head to the NCAA Regional Championship in Baton Rouge."
In her 14 seasons at ASU, Farr-Kaye and the Sun Devil women's golf program have never traveled to Louisiana.
The first appearance will give her team the chance to turn heads in the south, as the Devils boast the Pac-12 individual champion in freshman Linnea Strom.
Strom is coming off the best round in her collegiate career -- a six-under 66 on the final day -- and the 54-hole Pac-12 Championship record of 11-under 205.
Her teammate and team leader Monica Vaughn has been playing phenomenal golf all season, putting together seven top-10 finishes out of nine tournaments this season. Vaughn also earned her first outright tournament victory at the prestigious Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge that featured several of the top-ranked players in the country, including then-No. 1 Leona McGuire of Duke.
Along with then-No. 2 Duke, that same tournament that Vaughn won also featured the then-No. 12 Gators and then-No. 14 Washington -- also playing in the upcoming tournament with the Devils.
In the second tournament of the season -- the Windy City Classic in Chicago, Ill. -- the women defeated Florida by a whopping 19 strokes as they finished one stroke off the three-way tie atop the team leaderboard.
The Devils will tee off from the 1st hole on Thursday at 9:09 a.m. with the final tee time of the group going off at 9:45 a.m. ASU is paired up with 1-seed Duke and 2-seed Florida.
