LAS VEGAS—Five members of the Arizona State wrestling team will wrestle in Saturday's quarterfinals at the UWW Junior Nationals at the South Point Convention Center.
Four Sun Devils who redshirted in 2015-16 will wrestle on Saturday, including Josh Shields (74 kg), Anthony Valencia (74 kg), Zahid Valencia (84 kg), and Lance Benick (96 kg). Sophomore Jacen Petersen, who wrestles at 165 pounds during the regular season, will also wrestle in the 79 kg quarterfinals.
Shields opened the day with a 10-0 tech over Casey Dobson, and followed with an 11-0 tech over Jeremiah Moody. Shields' first opponent on Friday is Mark Hall. Also at 74 kg, A. Valencia opened with a 10-0 tech over Joseph Gunther and followed with a 12-1 tech over Kimball Bastian. Valencia will see Jordan Kutler in his opener on Saturday.
Petersen wrestled once at 79 kg, advancing past Steven Schneider, 6-6, on criteria. On Saturday, Petersen will first face off against Billy Bigelow.
At 84 kg, Z. Valencia opened with an 11-0 tech over Michael Smith, and followed with a 10-0 tech over Blake Reid. On Saturday, Valencia will take on Nathan Traxler in his opener.
Benick opened at 96 kg with a 12-6 decision over David Chadd, and followed with an 8-5 decision over Jackson Striggow. On Saturday, Benick will take on Andrew Marsden in the quarterfinals.
Additionally, two more Sun Devils will wrestle in consolation bracket matches on Saturday, Josh Kramer at 55 kg and Sully Cauley at 120 kg.
Action on Saturday continues at 9 a.m. PT with session two, and concludes at 3 p.m. PT with the third session.
Champions this weekend will automatically advance to the finals of the UWW Junior World Team Trials, May 20-22, also in Las Vegas, for a chance to represent the USA at the Junior World Championships, Aug. 30 to Sept. 4 in Macon, France.
