TEMPE -- Head coach Sheila McInerney and the Arizona State women's tennis team recorded the program's best-ever finish in Pac-10/12 Conference play and best since 1979 under ASU hall of fame coach Anne Pittman.
"We certainly have had a really good year and to go 8-2 in our conference beating both Stanford and UCLA is a huge accomplishment for our team," said McInerney. "We want to build on this as we head into the NCAA Championships."
The No. 22 Sun Devils' 8-2 record against conference foes is their best performance since they went 12-4 in the 1979 season when the Devils weren't a part of any power conference -- they were in the AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women).
During the course of the season, the ASU women forced upsets and ended losing streaks against two of the conference's elite, including a victory over the eventual Pac-12 Champions.
On March 5, the Devils defeated then-No. 20 Stanford for the second time in program history and the first time since 2008. The Cardinal clinched the Pac-12 Championship with their victory over No. 19 USC on Wednesday, with their only loss to McInerney's squad. ASU finished in fourth in the conference and had the second-most victories of the 11 teams.
Just over a week ago, the women knocked off No. 23 UCLA in Los Angeles for the first time since 2000. It was also the Devils' 10th-straight win.
Over the 10-game conference season, the Sun Devils only lost to No. 1 California and No. 19 USC.
The program's next best record since 1979 came in 2011 when the Devils went 7-3.
McInerney and her team are currently playing in the Pac-12 Singles and Doubles Championships in Ojai, Calif.
