TUCSON -- For the second-straight year, the Arizona State women's tennis team shut out the University of Arizona in the all-important Territorial Cup match with a 7-0 victory on Saturday afternoon.
The victory extends the Sun Devils' Territorial Cup total to 8.5 points and moves the magic number to two for ASU to clinch the overall series. It also became the first time head coach Sheila McInerney and her squad has won in Tucson since 2010.
"It was a great way to end the regular season," said McInerney. "I'm really proud of the team. It's never easy to beat your rival on the road, but the girls were determined to send the seniors off with a win. It was a convincing win for sure. Hopefully we can build off of this win for a nice postseason run."
As they've done all season, the No. 22 Sun Devils (17-5, 8-2) took care of business for the doubles point to start the match against the No. 67 Wildcats (12-11, 1-8).
No. 74 pair of Kassidy Jump and Sammi Hampton got back to their winning ways, defeating Camila Wesbrooks and Samantha Czarniak 6-3 on court three for the first of the best-of-three doubles matches. While court one saw an upset by No. 38 Lauren Marker and Shayne Austin of Arizona over No. 18 Ebony Panoho and Alex Osborne, the senior duo of Desirae Krawczyk and Stephanie Vlad weren't about to let up in their final match against the Wildcats. The seniors took care of business with a 6-3 win and clinched the doubles point over Devin Chypyha and Inge Hendrikx on court two.
Singles began on a high note on just about every court, with five of the six Sun Devils taking the victory in their first set.
Krawczyk -- ranked No. 26 in singles -- dropped the first set to No. 48 Marker, 1-6, and looked to be in some trouble at the start of the second set. However, a switch flipped and the senior rallied to win the second 7-5 and force a decisive third. Thankfully the match was already sealed, but Krawczyk still rolled to a 10-2 tiebreak set for the 6th point of the match.
On court two, No. 112 Jump ended her tough stretch of matches with a big victory to give ASU their first singles' point of the match. She won in straight sets over Austin, 7-5, 6-4.
The rookie Hampton picked up her 23rd victory of the season for the third point of the match, winning identical sets 6-3, 6-3.
Over on court four, Vlad tallied her seventh-straight victory and the Devils' match-deciding fourth point with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Wesbrooks.
Junior Gussie O'Sullivan kept to her winning ways as well, defeating Kinga Garnter on court six for her eighth-straight victory.
Stanford and USC will play a make-up match on Wednesday, April 20. If the Trojans win, the Sun Devils will finish in a tie for third in the conference, thus being the highest they have finished since 1998.
The women won't have long to rest, as they will turn around for the Pac-12 Championships starting on Thursday, April 21 in Ojai, Calif. Singles will begin Thursday, while doubles will start on Friday, April 22. You can purchase tickets to a specific day or for the entirety of the tournament here.
