LOS ANGELES – The No. 4 Arizona State University water polo team was undone by an 8-0 UCLA run to close out the game as the second-ranked Bruins pulled away to a 16-6 win on Friday in Los Angeles.
The Sun Devils (17-6, 3-3 MPSF) kept things close through two-and-a-half quarters but the high-powered Bruin offense proved to be too much, breaking open a close 8-6 game.
ASU was solid on the power play in the contest, scoring on 4-of-9 chances but the Bruins countered by going 5-of-7 chances.
Katie Sverchek scored two goals to lead the Devils while Daisy Carter, Maud Koopman, Ao Gao and Abbey Kerth each found the back of the net in the effort. Gao added two steals in the effort as well to lead the team.
The Sun Devils cut a three-goal UCLA lead to two goals midway through the third on Sverchek’s second goal of the game.
An ASU exclusion less than two minutes later led to a UCLA goal and the game snowballed from there.
The Sun Devils will close out the season next weekend on the road at San Diego State on Saturday, April 23 at 11 a.m. PT.
