TEMPE, Ariz.—The Arizona State track and field teams opened competition at the at the 37th Sun Angel Track Classic on Friday at Sun Angel Stadium with the men’s and women’s hammer and pole vault.

Leading the way for the Sun Devils was junior Nathan Heitt, who won the men’s open pole vault with a clearance at 5.05m (16-06.75). Redshirt freshman Matthew Eckles followed in sixth with a clearance at 4.90m (16-00.75), and junior Dillon Groener in 13th at 4.60m (15-1.00).

In the open women’s hammer, senior Ginger Jarchow led the way for ASU with a second-place finish at 57.52m (188-08), and redshirt junior Ashley Weber followed in fifth at 55.69m (182-08).

The Sun Devils had one competitor each in the premiere sections of the men’s and women’s hammer, with redshirt junior Kyle Long throwing a 61.26m (201-00) for fourth, and redshirt sophomore Maggie Ewen throwing 59.07m (193-09) for seventh.

Competition at the 37th Sun Angel Track Classic continues on Saturday with the women’s open discus starting at 10 a.m. PT. The open running events begin at 2:14 p.m. PT, and the premiere section will follow at 5:50 p.m. PT.
