TEMPE -- The Arizona State women’s tennis program is on a roll and will look to add to their four-game winning streak as they host San Diego State on Saturday, March 26 at noon PT.
“It’s important to keep that drive going,” said head coach Sheila McInerney. “We’re going out of conference and San Diego State is a good program. (Head coach) Peter Mattera has been there a long time and we haven’t played them in quite a while. So I think they’re going to come in hungry.”
The No. 19 Sun Devils moved up six spots in the rankings this week after ending the Ducks nine-game win streak, cracking the top-20 for the first time this season.
In singles, senior Desirae Kraczyk moved up one spot in the rankings to No. 24 after defeating Oregon’s Kennan Johnson. The victory ended Johnson’s perfect 5-0 streak against ranked opponents this season.
The victory also gave Krawczyk her 90th singles victory as a Sun Devil, and she currently ranks fourth all-time in singles wins in ASU history.
On court two, junior Kassidy Jump is now ranked No. 66 in singles after her loss this past weekend, ending her five-game winning streak. However, the loss came during a week where she suffered from an ear infection.
Jump and her doubles partner – freshman Sammi Hampton – didn’t let anything get in their way of rolling on to their 10th-straight victory together in doubles.
Also in doubles, the Australian duo of Ebony Panoho and Alex Osborne moved up one spot to No. 22 in the nation despite an unfinished match against then-No. 33 Johnson and Shweta Sangwan of Oregon, 3-3.
Doubles have been on fire thus far for ASU, having won 12 of 14 possible points this season. Their only losses have come at the hands of #2 Ohio State and #36 Northwestern.
The Aztecs have seen their ups and downs to this point in the season, posting a 6-10 overall record thus far.
Two days later, the Devils will host a rare double header against NAU and Montana at 10 a.m. PT and 2 p.m. PT, respectively.
