TEMPE, Ariz. - Seven Arizona State University women’s basketball players were named to the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball All-Academic teams, announced by Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott on Thursday.
The Sun Devils had two players earn first-team recognition (senior guard Elisha Davis and junior forward Kelsey Moos), one player earn second-team honors (junior center Quinn Dornstauder) and four players named honorable mention (redshirt senior forward Eliza Normen, senior guards Peace Amukamara and Katie Hempen and junior forward Sophie Brunner).
Davis was named to the first team after earning second-team honors each of the last two seasons. Currently a graduate student, Davis earned her undergraduate degree in communication with a 3.81 GPA in only 3.5 years. On the court, Davis earned Pac-12 All-Conference honors and was named to the Pac-12’s All-Defensive Team for a season in which she led ASU in assists (4.9 apg/5th in Pac-12), was second in 3-pointers (34) and steals (1.5 spg) and fifth in rebounds (2.5 rpg). Davis, who concluded her career No. 2 on ASU’s all-time list for career assists with 483, scored a career-high 18 points and matched a career-high with three 3-pointers in her final game vs. Tennessee on Sunday.
A communication major who is scheduled to graduate in only three years, Moos (3.90 GPA) earned first-team recognition for the second year in a row. This season Moos, who earned Pac-12 Defense honorable mention recognition, started all 28 games she has played in (missed five due to injury) and finished second on the team in rebounds (6.0 rpg), offensive rebounds (2.3 rpg) and steals (1.5 spg) and third in FG pct (43.6). Moos scored in double figures three times, including a season-high 17 points at Oregon (Jan. 29). During one five-game stretch in February, Moos averaged 8.6 rebounds. Included in that stretch was a career-high total of 12 rebounds at Stanford (Feb. 14).
A first-team honoree in 2015, Dornstauder is among the league’s top scholar-athletes for the second consecutive season. Earlier this season Dornstauder, who maintains a 3.83 GPA in biochemistry, was named to CoSIDA’s Academic All-District 8 Team and was in consideration for Academic All-America honors. Dornstauder’s athletic credentials were just as impressive as she played in every game (21 starts) and led ASU in blocks (1.3 bpg), was second in scoring (9.7 ppg) and third in rebounds (4.9 rpg). Dornstauder was responsible for three of ASU’s four highest single-game scoring highs in 2015-16 (25 vs. Washington - highest, 24 at UCLA - second highest and 21 at SMU - 4th highest).
Normen (3.25 GPA/Microbiology/fourth time on Pac-12 All-Academic Team) is currently working on a second degree after earning her BS in Kinesiology. A team leader and one of the program’s most consistent contributors throughout her career, Normen played in 134 games and leaves as the team’s record holder for most blocks in an NCAA Tournament game (5 vs. Ohio in 2015)
Hempen (3.25/Master’s of Education/third time on Pac-12 All-Academic Team), is currently working on her master’s degree in Education. The program’s all-time leader in 3-point field goals (184), Hempen was named to the Pac-12’s All-Conference Team this past season after finishing third on the team in scoring (9.3 ppg) and second in assists (2.6 apg).
Brunner (3.56/Educational Studies/second time on Pac-12 All-Academic Team) has had one of the most decorated seasons by a Sun Devil in recent memory. The team leader in scoring (10.7 ppg), rebounds (7.4 rpg), FG pct (53.0) and steals (1.7 spg), Brunner was named to the Pac-12’s All-Conference and All-Defense Teams. Most recently she was named to the WBCA’s All-Region 5 Team on Wednesday and is now in consideration for All-America honors.
Amukamara (3.29 GPA/Family and Human Development), who transferred to ASU from Mesa Community College where she earned NJCAA All-American honors, played in 68 carerr games for the Sun Devils and was among the team leaders in assists each of the last two seasons.
Since the 1996-97 season, head coach Charli Turner Thorne’s first season at ASU, the Sun Devils lead the Pac-12 in the number of first-team All-Academic conference awards (now 19) and the combined number of first- and second-team All-Academic conference awards (now 40). Last season ASU’s team GPA (3.558) was No. 7 on the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) 2015 Academic Honor Roll.
