RANCHO SANTA FE -- The Arizona State women's golf team wrapped up the San Diego State March Mayhem match-play tournament on Wednesday afternoon, and came away with a sixth-place finish.
The rare format provided for head-to-head match-play through the three days, while also giving teams an extra round of competition compared to their regular three.
"We competed hard today but the breaks did just not go our way," said head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. "I am pleased with how hard we fought. We are looking forward to our only home event of the year in two weeks."
The 13th-ranked Sun Devils fell victim to the host school on the final day despite picking up the first victory of match-play thanks to freshman Linnea Strom.
Strom won her match, going six up with four holes to play to give ASU the early 1-0 lead. Her round consisted of 15 pars and three birdies on the final day. On the weekend, the rookie put together three victories while halving her match against Stanford's Casey Danielson.
The Aztecs -- ranked No. 17 -- won matches three through five to clinch 3-1-1.
Junior Monica Vaughn halved her match with Milagros Chaves thanks to her birdie on the 18th, going 2-1-1 on the weekend in her matches.
The Sun Devils will be off for a week before hosting the PING/ASU Invitational from Friday, April 8 through Sunday, April 10 at Karsten Golf Course.
