TEMPE, Ariz.—Arizona State gymnastics’ senior duo of Taylor Allex and Allie Salas will compete as individual event qualifiers at the NCAA Regional meet in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Saturday, April 2, the NCAA announced on Monday.
Allex will compete on vault and floor, while Salas will compete in the all-around. The meet is slated for a 2 p.m. PT/4 p.m. CT start at the Coleman Coliseum.
Along with host No. 4 Alabama, No. 10 California, No. 15 Boise State, No. 21 Kentucky, West Virginia, and Bowling Green will compete with full teams, while individuals from Southeast Missouri State, Illinois-Chicago, Northern Illinois, Texas Woman’s University, and Illinois State will compete against the Gym Devils.
Allex, who is competing in her second straight NCAA regional for the Gym Devils, has scored each of ASU’s top scores on vault this year, tying her career high of 9.900 four times and hitting 9.875 twice. She also scored each of the top-five scores on floor, including a career high 9.950 in the Gym Devils’ meet against California on Feb. 15.
Salas led the Gym Devils in the All-Around this year, scoring a career high 39.100 twice. Additionally, Salas’ 39.050 from the Feb. 27 meet at UCLA earned her the first all-around victory of her career. Salas also won the All-Around in ASU’s rivalry meet against Arizona on Feb. 23. This season, Salas scored career highs on beam (9.725) and floor (9.875).
Additionally, junior Beka Conrad has been slated as an alternate on balance beam. Conrad led the Gym Devils on beam this year, scoring a season high 9.825 twice, most recently at the 2016 Pac-12 Championships.
The top two teams and top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Fort Worth, Tex. April 15-16, hosted by Texas Women’s University and the Knight Eady Sports Group.
In addition, the event winners at each regional site will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.
