NEW YORK CITY—The Arizona State wrestling team wrapped the 2015-16 season on Friday, rounding things out at the second day of the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships at Madison Square Garden.
Redshirt senior No. 6 Blake Stauffer and freshman Tanner Hall made it to the blood round—the round of consolation that determines the wrestle-back All-Americans, but fell in their matches at 184 and heavyweight, respectively.
To open the day, Stauffer defeated Andrew Romanchik of Ohio in a 4-3 decision before topping Jeff Koepke of Illinois in sudden victory, 5-3. In the fourth round of consolations, Oklahoma State’s Nolan Boyd came out on top in a 6-4 decision.
Stauffer wraps his season at 26-5, and his career at 106-23. His 106 wins are 17th most all-time at ASU, and he was the first Sun Devil to surpass the 100-win mark since Anthony Robles capped his career in 2011. A 2015 All-American, Stauffer won back to back Pac-12 titles in 2015 and 2016. His 55 dual wins are tied for No. 8 all-time, and his 44 bonus-point victories are No. 11 all-time at ASU. He also sits in the record book with his career tech falls with 14 (No. 4), and career major decisions with 22 (No. 8).
Hall opened the day with a win over Edinboro’s William Miller, a 5-3 decision, before he posted a 10-6 decision over Oklahoma’s Ross Larson, the third time the pair wrestled this season. In the fourth round of consolation, Hall fell to No. 7 Amarveer Dhesi, 3-2, in the duo’s third matchup this season.
Hall wraps his first season with the Sun Devils at 26-12, with seven bonus-point victories. A runner up at the 2015 Midlands Championships, Hall finished third at the 2016 Pac-12 Championships.
Also putting the cap on their Sun Devil careers was senior 149-pounder Matt Kraus and redshirt senior 197-pounder Josh DaSilveira, who both fell in their second-round consolation matches on Friday.
Kraus posted his 80th career victory in his NCAA Championships opener, and his 27 bonus-point victories are No. 19 all-time at ASU. Kraus’ 19 career major decisions sit in a tie for No. 12 all-time. Kraus went 5-0 this season in Pac-12 duals, and finished as the conference runner up in his weight class.
DaSilveira posted 52 wins in his career, and went 23-10 in 2016. A 2016 Pac-12 Champion in his senior year, DaSilveira earned his first trip to the NCAA Championships in 2016.
At 133, junior Dalton Brady fell in his first match of the day, 4-3 in tiebreaker to Wisconsin’s Ryan Taylor. Brady finished the 2016 campaign at 17-4, coming back from a knee injury in November to win the Pac-12 title and take the lone automatic qualifying spot from the conference.
ASU finished with 9.5 points, and currently sits in a tie for 33rd at the NCAA Championships. Going into the final day of competition, Penn State leads with 114 points, Oklahoma State in second with 79.5 and Iowa in third with 77.5 points.
The standings will be finalized at the conclusion of Saturday’s competition.
