TEMPE – Arizona State University water polo freshman Maud Koopman has been named the MPSF Newcomer of the Week, as announced by the federation on Tuesday.
Koopman did it all for the Devils at the ASU Invitational this past weekend, helping the team to a 3-0 record at the tournament. The freshman scored four goals on the weekend but perhaps none were as important as her last one, as her only goal against No. 16 Wagner in the fourth quarter would prove to be the game-winner in an 8-6 victory.
The Dutch attacker was an all-around threat all weekend as she tabbed four assists in the tournament and four steals and was the model of consistency at both ends of the pool. Her best all-around effort came against No. 24 CSU Bakersfield as she helped the Sun Devils to a 13-4 MPSF victory over the Roadrunners with two goals, two assists and three steals.
Just a freshman, Koopman is currently third on the team with 17 goals this season. Her 13 assists also pace the Sun Devils, as do her 18 steals and 30 total points on the year.
The Sun Devils (10-4, 1-1 MPSF) continue action this weekend in another round of the ASU Invitational, beginning Saturday at 10:30 a.m. PT against fifth-ranked Michigan.
