TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Baseball junior infielder and pitcher David Greer has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week for his role in leading Arizona State to five wins this past week, the conference announced Monday.
Greer, who is from Scottsdale, Ariz., started all five games at first base and tallied 11 hits, including three doubles and a home run, four RBI, and three runs scored, and pitched two scoreless innings across a six-day span. He notched a .458 batting average, a .481 on-base percentage, and a .708 slugging percentage over the past five games and his play powered the Devils to eight straight wins, the program’s longest winning streak since May 2014 and tied for the longest since 2010.
He hit the go-ahead home run and pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win at No. 23 Cal State Fullerton on March 9. He allowed just one base runner and struck out two in the 12th and 13th innings, and hit a leadoff solo home run in the 14th inning in a 2-1 road victory.
Greer had multiple hits in four of five games this past week, and accounted for at least one run in each of the five games as he drove in a run in four games and scored a run in three of them. He scored the tying run in the eighth inning against UC Davis on March 13 after his double put the tying runs in scoring position, and he drew a walk in the 12th inning on March 12 that eventually led to a bases-loaded, walk-off walk two batters later.
This is Greer’s first career Pac-12 Player of the Week nod and ASU’s 106th all-time selection. He is the first position player for the Sun Devils to earn the honor since Drew Stankiewicz on May 19, 2014.
The Devils host Meiji University from Japan in an exhibition game March 15 before opening Pac-12 play with a three-game against Oregon State March 18-20 in Corvallis, Ore. First pitch on March 15 is set for 6:30 p.m. AZ/PT and will be televised on Pac-12 Networks. The conference opener against the Beavers on March 18 is slated for a 5:35 start, with Saturday and Sunday set for 1:35 p.m. and 12:35 p.m., respectively (all times AZ/PT).
