FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Arizona State sophomore divers Heikki Makikallio and Mara Aiacoboae both qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 10-meter platform event on Wednesday.
Both competed in the NCAA Zone E Championships hosted by Northern Arizona University at the new Aquatic and Tennis Complex from Monday through Wednesday.
Aiacoboae already qualified in the women's 1-meter springboard event on Monday, and came back on day three to once again qualify for the second-straight year. After finishing in second at the zone qualifier last season, Aiacoboae went on to finish fourth at the NCAA Championships off the platform in her freshman season.
This year, the Romanian sophomore again finished second with a score of 616.60 after entering the finals in first through the prelims.
After just missing the cut last season at the NCAA Zone E Championships -- finishing ninth off the platform -- Makikallio locked up his first trip to the NCAA Championships.
THe sophomore from Finland entered the finals in sixth place and would finish the event in second with a score of 734.20.
The women's NCAA Championships will be held in Atlanta from Wednesday,March 16 through Saturday, March 19. The men's NCAA Championships will also take place in Atlanta from Wednesday, March 23 through Saturday, March 26.
