FULLERTON, Calif. – David Greer hit the go-ahead home run in the top of the 14th and pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win in Sun Devil Baseball’s 2-1 victory against No. 23 Cal State Fullerton in 14 innings on Wednesday night at Goodwin Stadium.
Greer (1-0), in his second career appearance on the mound and second in the past three games, allowed just one base runner and struck out a pair across the 12th and 13th innings, and added three hits, including a solo home run that broke the scoreless tie.
Shortstop Colby Woodmansee reached base four times on two hits and two walks, and scored the second run of the game in the 14th inning on a double from catcher Brian Serven.
Right-hander Seth Martinez (1) took the mound in the bottom of the 14th and picked up his first career save. Fullerton used a leadoff double, a single, and a fielding error on a grounder up the middle to pull within one, 2-1, but Martinez recorded three straight outs to preserve the win and the two-game series sweep.
The Sun Devils (10-3) kept the Titans (6-6) off the board for 13 innings behind the arms of seven pitchers.
Freshman right-hander James Ryan excelled in his first career start as he allowed just one hit and one walk with two strikeouts across four innings. He gave up a one-out single in the first, but issued a double-play ball and proceeded to retire eight straight until a hit batter with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.
Ryan and fellow freshman right-hander Fitz Stadler combined to allow just two hits and four total base runners across the first six innings. Stadler permitted just two base runners on a single and a walk, and struck out one in two scoreless innings.
Arizona State used three pitchers in the seventh inning to strand a runner at second and keep the scoreless tie intact. Stadler walked the first batter of the frame and was replaced by right-hander Eric Melbostad, who coerced a lineout to left field after his balk advanced the leadoff man to second. Left-hander Tucker Baca took over with one out and issued back-to-back strikeouts, including one looking and one swinging, to end the inning.
Left-hander Reagan Todd gave up a pair of hits and struck out four in three scoreless innings. He opened the eighth inning and operated around a one-out single, struck out the side in the ninth, and worked out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the 10th. A leadoff walk and a single put the pressure on Todd, but a chopper to left side of the infield allowed the Devils to get the lead runner out at third and almost turn a double play. However, Todd walked the next batter on four straight pitches to put the winning run 90 feet away, but he induced a shallow fly ball to center field that didn’t allow the runners to advance and was able to get a pop fly in foul territory that stranded all three on base.
Left-hander Eli Lingos pitched the 11th and issued a pair walks, but did not allow a hit.
