TEMPE, Ariz. -- The United State Golf Association (USGA) announced the women's 2016 Curtis Cup USA Team on Tuesday morning, and Arizona State junior Monica Vaughn was one of the eight players named.
"I am thrilled for Mo being named to the Curtis Cup team," said Sun Devil women's golf head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. "She has worked very hard to achieve this top honor. Mo joins an elite group of former ASU players that were members of this team, and I know she will represent her country and ASU well."
Vaughn becomes the first Sun Devil women's golfer to be named to the team since Jennifer Johnson in 2010, and just the second over the last 15 years. She becomes the 14th ASU golfer all-time -- along with Sun Devil Hall of Famers Heather Farr, Kellee Booth, Wendy Ward, Danielle Ammaccapane, Emilee Klein, Jane Bastanchury-Booth, Pearl Sinn, Joanne Gunderson-Carner and Carol Sorenson -- to be selected to the Curtis Cup team.
She also joins Amy Fruhwirth, Brandie Burton and Mari McDougall as former Sun Devil Curtis Cup honorees.
In her five tournaments since the fall, Vaughn has four top-10 finishes, including her recent victory at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. Her six-under 65 on the final round is tied for second-best on the ASU all-time list.
“These eight young women who will represent the United States in the 39th Curtis Cup Match are among the most talented players in the world,” said Diana Murphy, USGA president. “The USGA is proud to have them as ambassadors for the game, and we wish them the best of luck as they prepare for the competition in June.”
The Curtis Cup Match is a biennial international women’s amateur golf competition between eight-player teams from the United States of America and Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I). It consists of six foursomes (alternate-shot) matches, six four-ball matches and eight singles matches over three days of competition. The USGA’s International Team Selection (ITS) Committee selects the USA Team, while the Ladies’ Golf Union selects the GB&I Team.
Vaughn will travel with her seven teammates to Dun Laoghaire Golf Club in Enniskerry, Ireland, outside Dublin, with the tournament being played from June 10-12.
The junior is currently ranked No. 14 in the Women's World Amateur Golf Ranking.
