TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Baseball and adidas, inspired by the program’s legacy over the past half-century, unveiled a new look Wednesday that meshes the team’s iconic identity with modern uniform technology and style.
The Devils have five uniform tops, including three pullovers and two button-ups, and two pants options for the 2016 season. Each uniform top was designed to pay homage to the program’s different eras of excellence, from the 1960s through the 2000s.
The uniform tops include a maroon top with ‘Devils’ script in gold, two cream tops - one with ‘Devils’ block lettering in maroon and one with the interlocking AS, a gray top with ‘Sun Devils’ in Sun Devil Bold, and a gold top with a pitchfork, and gray and cream pants. The program is also re-introducing the gold hat to go with its traditional maroon counterpart.
A special uniform commemorating an iconic Sun Devil for Life will also be unveiled later in the season.
The cream tops with the interlocking AS are a variation of the uniforms worn in the latter half of the 1960s under visionary head coach Bobby Winkles and honor the team’s championship seasons in both 1967 and ’69. This era is credited with building the foundation for the program and included Sal Bando, Ron Davini, John Dolinsek, and Reggie Jackson, among many others.
The maroon tops with gold ‘Devils’ script and the gold tops, although incorporating a modern twist with the pitchfork, harken back to the 1970s and 80s under legendary head coach Dr. Jim Brock, and an era when ASU won two national championships and produced Eddie Bane, Barry Bonds, Bob Horner, and Ken Landreaux, among many others.
The gray tops with the ‘Sun Devils’ in Sun Devil Bold, which include gold numbers on the front and maroon numbers on the back, are influenced by the team’s uniforms in the 1990s, a decade that included consecutive College World Series appearances in 1993-94, a second-place finish in 1998, and Sun Devil greats Willie Bloomquist, Jacob Cruz, Mike Kelly, and Paul Lo Duca, among many others.
The cream tops with the ‘Devils’ block lettering in maroon were inspired by the team’s dominant run from 2000-10 under head coaches Pat Murphy and Tim Esmay that saw the Devils advance to four College World Series’, win four straight Pac-10 championships, and produce Kole Calhoun, Andre Ethier, Jason Kipnis, Mike Leake, and Dustin Pedroia, among many others.
