EUGENE, Ore. – Kelsey Moos scored a season-high 17 points and the eighth-ranked Arizona State women’s basketball team used a 26-6 scoring burst in the third quarter to turn a seven-point halftime deficit into a 13-point lead on its way to a 63-58 win at Oregon.
Elisha Davis and Sabrina Haines added 10 points each for the Sun Devils (18-3, 9-0 Pac-12), who tied tied the program record for consecutive wins with their 15th in a row.
On a night when they shot 36.5 percent, five points below their season shooting percentage, the Sun Devils found other ways to manufacture points as they connected on 19-of-20 free throws (95 percent) and scored 20 points off of Oregon’s 16 turnovers.
The Ducks (14-6, 3-6 Pac-12), who came into the game on a three-game winning streak, connected on 41.5 percent of their shots, and for much of the first half, found themselves in control of the game.
The Sun Devils scored only five points in the first seven-plus minutes of the game. After a 7-0 run by the Ducks midway through the opening period ASU found itself down by nine, 14-5, tying the biggest deficit it has faced this season.
Moos, who connected on a career-high three triples on Friday, hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter to help ASU get within six, 16-10, after the first 10 minutes of play.
Haines (four points) and Kianna Ibis (four points) came off the bench to combine for eight of ASU’s 10 points in the second quarter. Although they were unable to sustain any kind offensive rhythm in the first half, the Sun Devils found themselves down by only a single point after the second of consecutive jumpers by Ibis with 2:21 left in the second quarter.
The Ducks would counter by knocking down a pair of 3-pointers over the last 1:52 of the half to take a 27-20 lead into the locker room.
Facing their biggest halftime deficit of the season, the Sun Devils came out for the second half determined to make sure the game would not get any further away from them. Moos personally outscored the Ducks 7-0 over the first 2:33 of the third quarter to knot the game at 27-27. Then Davis, who scored all 10 of her points in the second half, added a pair of 3-pointers sandwiched around a pair of free throws by Quinn Dornstauder, and suddenly the Devils were out in front 35-27 with 4:26 left in the third quarter.
Oregon’s first points of the quarter did not come until Jillian Alleyne, who had game highs in points (19) and rebounds (21), scored on a tip-in with 3:38 remaining. ASU would quickly respond as Arnecia Hawkins and Sophie Brunner scored back-to-back baskets to give ASU its first double-digit lead of the game, 39-29. Haines would hit a 3-pointer later in the quarter to give ASU’s its biggest lead of the game, 44-31.
The Sun Devils made 57 percent of their shots in the third quarter, held Oregon to only 30 percent from the floor and scored 12 points off the eight Oregon turnovers they forced. Moos (seven points) and Davis (six points) combined for half of ASU’s 26 points in the period. ASU also had seven of its eight steals in the third quarter. Peace Amukamara, who tied her career high with three steals in the game, had two in the third quarter, as did Ibis.
The Ducks would score the first seven points of the fourth quarter to cut ASU’s lead to 46-40, but the Devils would respond as Dornstauder (jumper), Brunner (tip-in) and Moos (two free throws) reeled off the next six points to double ASU’s advantage, 52-40.
Oregon would get back within five late in the game, but Katie Hempen (2-2 FTs) and Davis (2-2 FTs) combined to go 4-4 from the line in the final 26 seconds to seal the win.
After getting outrebounded 19-13 in the first half, ASU turned the tables in the second half with an 18-10 advantage on the glass. Brunner, Moos and Dornstauder had six rebounds each to tie for the team lead.
The Sun Devils return to action on Monday (8 p.m. PT/9 p.m. MT) when they travel to Corvallis, Ore., to take on No. 9 Oregon State in a Big Monday matchup that will be televised live by ESPN2.
