TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University women’s basketball player Elisha Davis was one of 30 student-athletes named as candidates for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award® in women’s basketball, according to an announcement by the nominating committee.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Davis, a senior guard, has been one of the biggest contributors on both ends of the floor for the Sun Devils (15-3, 6-0 Pac-12), who are currently No. 8 in the AP Top 25 (tied for highest ranking in program history). Davis has started every game and currently leads ASU in assists (5.4 apg/4th in Pac-12), is second in 3-pointers (17) and steals (1.5 spg) and fifth in rebounding (3.1 rpg). She has dished out five or more assists 11 times, including a career-high-tying 11 vs. Marquette (Dec. 19). Davis, who has also had eight games with two or fewer turnovers, has scored in double figures seven times this season, including a season-high 15 points at SMU. Currently No. 3 on ASU’s all-time list in career assists (416), Davis needs 26 more assists to move into the No. 2 spot.
In the classroom Davis has been equally brilliant. In December Davis, who has earned Second-Team Pac-12 All-Academic honors each of the last two seasons, earned her communication degree, graduating with a 3.81 GPA. She is now pursuing her master’s degree in communication.
In the community Davis has done more than 150 hours of service during her ASU career. Her community endeavors have included volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club of Tempe, the annual Komen Race for the Cure in Phoenix and the annual Pat’s Run in Tempe. She also speaks at elementary schools in the area.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2016 NCAA Women’s Final Four®.
Each of the 30 candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select the candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
