PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- Senior Desirae Krawczyk is on something of a hot streak after winning the Palm Spring Invitational on Sunday afternoon, as she defeated No. 18 Catherine Harrison from UCLA 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.
"I think the tournament went really well and I think I learned a lot more about my game this weekend," said Krawczyk. "I learned what I did well to help prepare for this upcoming weekend against Northwestern too."
It was something of a homecoming for the Palm Desert, Calif. native -- just 14 miles away -- and she embraced the chance to play in front of familiar faces.
"It's a great feeling to win a tournament at home with my family and closest friends out there to watch, so it was something special," she said.
The break didn't deter her focus at all as the last time she was on the court she won the ASU Thunderbird tournament in November.
On Saturday, Krawczyk upset the No. 2 seed in the tournament -- and No. 20 ranked player in the country -- Taylor Davidson from Stanford 6-4, 6-4. She followed that up with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Arizona's Lauren Marker, who is ranked No. 64 in the country.
"I was happy for Des as she really played well and dictated both of her matches yesterday and won a tough one today," said head coach Sheila McInerney. "Her first serve has really improved and it was a huge weapon."
In doubles, junior Kassidy Jump and freshman Sammi Hampton along with the duo of senior Ebony Panoho and junior Alexandra Osborne both made it to the semifinals on Saturday.
Jump and Hampton took down Laura Luca and Catherine Harris from UCLA 6-2. Panoho and Osborne defeated Lindsey Kostas and Naomi Rosenberg of Stanford 6-1.
Unfortunately in the semifinals, Panoho and Osborne lost to Lauren Marker and Shayne Austin 6-4, while Jump and Hampton fell to No. 10 Taylor Davidson and Caroline Doyle of Stanford 6-3.
