PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- The Arizona State women's tennis team finished day one of the Palm Springs Invitational and senior Desirae Krawczyk is moving on to the quarterfinal round on Saturday, Jan. 16.
Unfortunately, the price of moving there came at the cost of knocking out teammate Alexandra Osborne in round two, 6-4, 6-4. She bounced Stanford's Naomi Rosenberg 6-1, 6-1 in round one.
Osborne advanced to face Krawczyk after defeating San Diego's Shani Blecher 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
Her senior teammate Ebony Panoho advanced to round two after defeating San Diego's Martha Stojanovic 6-1, 6-3. In round two, she fell to UCLA's Catherine Harris -- ranked No. 18 in the country -- after a hard-fought battle 1-6, 7-6, 4-6.
Juniors Kassidy Jump and Gussie O'Sullivan both also advanced through round one, as USC's Meredith Xepoleas retired in her match to Jump due to illness after going down 5-0. Jump would then go three sets with Arizona's Shayne Austin before falling 1-6, 7-6, 4-6.
O'Sullivan came up victorious over USD's Maria Torres in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, but then ran into No. 64 Lauren Marker from Arizona and lost 1-6, 1-6.
Freshman Sammi Hampton battled hard in round one with Dana Oppinger from San Diego before falling victim 6-7(4), 2-6.
In doubles, Krawczyk paired up with O'Sullivan for the first time this year as they defeated San Diego's Torres and Blecher 6-2.
Jump and Hampton teamed up to beat Spinosa and Oppinger 6-3.
“It was good to get back competing after a two month break from match play,” said head coach Sheila McInerney. “I thought today was a mixed bag with some good performances and some we will need to improve upon. Ebony and Alex played some very good tennis today which was nice to see."
Day two will once again consist of doubles play in the morning followed by Krawczyk in the quarterfinals against Taylor Davidson of Stanford, who is ranked No. 20 in the country.
