TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 17 Arizona State women’s basketball team used a dominant defensive performance and a big first-half run to defeat Columbia 70-49 in the final day of the annual ASU Classic.
Senior Katie Hempen and junior Quinn Dornstauder each scored a game-high 14 points for the Sun Devils (4-3), who had only seven turnovers. Freshman Sabrina Haines tied a career high with 11 points on 3-4 shooting from beyond the arc.
Dornstauder, who led ASU with 17 points in Saturday’s game vs. VCU, was named to the ASU Classic All-Tournament Team.
“I thought we responded well today,” ASU head coach Charli Turner Thorne said. “I thought we came out and gave a good Sun Devil effort. We’ve talked about how we need to focus on workmanship instead of showmanship and I thought we did a good job of that today.”
ASU started off 1-10 from the field, while Columbia (5-3) shot 9-12 (75 percent) in the opening quarter. After the Lions sank their first two shots of the second quarter to take a 24-19 lead, the Sun Devils ripped off a 23-2 run capped off by a three from Hempen to take a 42-26 lead with 26 seconds left in the half and never looked back.
The Sun Devils dominated the hustle stats all game long, finishing with 20 offensive rebounds and forcing 21 Columbia turnovers. ASU also assisted on 16 of its 24 made field goals and shot 13-15 (86.7 percent) from the free throw line.
Elisha Davis, who had nine assists on Saturday, added nine more on Sunday. For the weekend Davis had 18 assists and only four turnovers. A day after scoring 10 points and grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds, senior Arnecia Hawkins added 10 more points on Sunday. Also contributing was freshman Kianna Ibis, who had eight points.
Arizona native Camille Zimmerman, who represented Columbia on the ASU Classic All-Tournament Team, led the Lions with nine points and four rebounds, while Paulina Korner and Devon Roeper each had eight points.
Up next for the Sun Devils will be a trip to New York to take on No. 20 Syracuse (5-2) on Saturday (1 p.m. ET/11 a.m. MT) followed by a game at Hartford on Mon., Dec. 14 (6 p.m. ET/4 p.m. MT).
