Instead, Arizona State killed the penalty and battled until Jordan Masters found a lane and fired the game-winner past the Laker goaltender to give the Sun Devils a 3-2 win and their first sweep as a Division I program.
"We faced a ton of adversity in this second game and our guys really fought their way through it,” head coach Greg Powers said. “I couldn't be more proud of our guys. What a great weekend for our young program."
The Sun Devils got out to an early lead when Charlie Zuccarini scored his second goal of the season at the 4:58 mark of the first period. ASU seemed to have it in cruise control, allowing a goal but getting right back when Ryan Stevens scored his second of the season and in as many nights.
Arizona State took a penalty with 2:35 remaining in regulation and it was on the ensuing power play that Lake Superior State pounced. At the 19:18 mark, just 52 seconds from a loss, Gus Correale scored to send the game to an extra frame.
Ryland Pashovitz was superb was once again for the Sun Devils, stopping 36 shots and improving his record to 4-5-0. He made big save after big save and was rewarded in the overtime when Masters scored to end it.
Masters also had an assist in the game, giving him five goals and nine assists for 14 points in just 11 games. The goals and points numbers lead the team and his 14 points rank among the national leaders.
It was the first overtime win in ASU history, as well as the first sweep, first road sweep and first time ASU had won back-to-back road games. The Sun Devils take next weekend off before traveling to Clarkson on Thanksgiving weekend.
