TEMPE, Ariz. (Day 2) - Senior Desirae Krawczyk won all four of her matches in straight sets through the first two days to earn a spot in the ASU Thunderbird championship on Sunday against Michigan's Kate Fahey.
Krawczyk unfortunately had to go through fellow senior Ebony Panoho in the semifinals -- winning 6-1, 7-5 -- to get there. In the quarterfinals, Panoho knocked off the other senior in their trio Stephanie Vlad 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Like Krawczyk, Fahey has gotten to the championship by winning all her matches in straight sets as well, including a semifinal victory over No. 3 Sophie Watts of Fresno 6-3, 6-4.
Freshman Sammi Hampton continued to pick up victories after that tough three-set loss in the first match of the tournament, as she will take on Maja Vujic of Minnesota in the semifinal of the 1st Round Consolation Bracket at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
Juniors Kassidy Jump and Gussie O'Sullivan also earned victories on day two, with Jump getting an emotional victory over San Diego's Sophia Chow that involved a disagreement early in the second set over a ball being in or out. After a ruling by the official in favor of Jump, she went on to win the final set 6-0 for the match victory.
O'Sullivan won 6-5, 6-2 over Lyann Hoang of Cal, but is scratched from her match with Jump on Sunday as Drew Spinosa of San Diego was a scratch from the remainder of the tournament in the upper bracket. Instead, Jump will play No. 4 Karla Popovic of Cal in the final match of the Maroon Draw 2nd Round Consolation Bracket at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Vlad will take on No. 3 Watts on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in the Quarterfinal losers bracket.
Day three continues on Sunday with doubles at 8:30 a.m. followed by the singles bracket play at 9:30 a.m. Krawczyk will take on Fahey on court 1.
