The Sun Devils scored one goal on their last road trip and had scored five total this season. They needed a spark to their offense. They got it Friday night in convincing fashion, taking down the Southern New Hampshire Penmen 9-2 in front of an over-capacity sellout.
Freshman defenseman Nicholas Gushue scored the first two goals of the game, the first two of his career in the effort. What followed was an offensive onslaught, which included goals by Jack Rowe, Liam Norris, Ryan Ostertag, Joe Lappin, Charlie Zuccarini, Jordan Masters and Sean Murphy.
In total, ASU put the puck on the goalie 54 times, a season-high. Freshman goalie David Jacobson got his first career start in net and made 15 saves.
The Sun Devils return to the ice Saturday for round two with the Penmen. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Oceanside Ice Arena in Tempe.
