TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State women's swim team encountered their first loss of the season, as Washington State earned their first win of the year at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on Thursday, Oct. 22.

Despite winning three of the first four events, the Sun Devils couldn't make up the points down the stretch and fell 115-90 to the Cougars.

ASU started off hot, as junior Ingibjord Jonsdottir, freshman Kaya Philapil, senior Marina Spadoni and junior Alysha Bush brought home the first victory of the meet in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:42.72. Washington State would pick up six points with second and third place.

Two races later, junior Katarina Simonovic earned another nine points for the Sun Devils with a time of 1:50.61 in the 200-yard freestyle. Senior Jamie Friderichs earned a fourth-place finish with a time of 1:53.37 for another two points.

In the next race, Bush was back at it after anchoring the 200-yard medley relay, as she nearly made the NCAA "B" Standard time with a finish of 23.19 -- .20 off the standard.

Just before the first break in the meet, Washington State picked up a crucial 16 points with the top-three finishes in the 200-yard individual medley. That turned the tide, washing away the Devils 13-point lead into a three-point deficit.

The Cougars returned from break to take the top-three times in the 200-yard freestyle as well to go up 19 points, and they never looked back.

Bush picked up her second victory of the evening in the 100-yard freestyle -- once again nearly hitting the "B" Standard qualifying time -- with a time of 50.11.

Friderichs also picked up her first win of the season in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:59.06.
