ANCHORAGE, Alaska– Late in the third period, it looked like Sun Devil Hockey was headed to overtime for the second night in a row. But junior forward Ryan Belonger had other plans.

With 34 seconds left in regulation, Belonger took an outlet pass from freshman Jordan Masters and buried the puck on a breakaway, lifting the Sun Devils to a 2-1 victory over Alaska Fairbanks, the first in NCAA Division I program history.

"I obviously could not be more proud of our players and staff," head coach Greg Powers said. "This was a very successful weekend for us and we will take a day to enjoy it before getting back to work."

The night started eerily similar to Friday night. Fairbanks controlled the game in the first period, leaving the frame with a 1-0 lead. But the Sun Devils battled back in the second when senior forward Garrett Peterson tied it up at the 1:13 mark. Belonger and freshman defenseman Joey Raats assisted, both their second helper in as many nights.

Freshman goalie Ryland Pashovitz got the call between the pipes and was lights out. After a nifty back-handed sweep by Nanooks' Tyler Morley in the first, Pashovitz settled in and stood tall on Fairbanks barrage, making 37 saves.

ASU finishes the Kendall Hockey Classic with a 1-1 record with an even goal differential.

The Sun Devils return to the ice Thursday, Oct. 15 when they make a trip to Connecticut for three games in three nights in three cities against Quinnipiac, UCONN and Sacred Heart.

ASU’s next home games are Oct. 23 and 24 against Southern New Hampshire at Oceanside Ice Arena.
