TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State men and women's swim and dive teams will compete in separate meets on the opening weekend of the 2015-16 season.
New head coach Bob Bowman and his staff will either make the trek to Corvallis, Ore. for the women's meet with Oregon State, or head for northern California for the men's battle with University of the Pacific in Stockton.
A win by both squads would be the first time since Oct. 20, 2006 that the men and women both won on opening weekend.
After setting a team record for points last season at the Pac-12 Championships with 309 points, the Devils return four seniors for the men and three for the women.
For the men, senior diver Hunter Atha returns after his first-team CSCAA Scholar Athlete honor. Redshirt senior swimmer Thibaut Capitaine looks to build off last season when he placed 7th in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Pac-12 Championships with a time of 53.21. He also placed 6th in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Junior Barkley Perry has shown improvement each year since arriving in 2013, placing 7th in the 200-yard backstroke at the Pac-12 Championships in 2015 with a time of 1:42.50.
After returning from shoulder surgery in January of 2015, junior Richard Brohus grabbed four top-five finishes in the 50- and 100-yard backstroke and the 50- and 100-yard freestyle at the Pac-12 Championships.
For the women, senior Jamie Friderichs returns after capturing four top-three finishes between January and February of last year. She also competed in the 2015 Arizona Long Course Open, finishing first in the 100-long freestyle, second in the 50-long freestyle and third in the 200-long freestyle.
In the backstroke, seniors Jennifer Morgan and Marina Spadoni lead the women, while Spadoni also competes in the freestyle.
Both the men and women warmed up for the season in the maroon and gold intrasquad meet last week, allowing them to ramp up their competitive edge before this weekend.
The women start in Corvallis at 11 a.m. while the men hit the pool in Stockton at 12 p.m.
