TEMPE – The Arizona State University softball program has announced its 2015 Thanksgiving and Holiday Camp schedule, featuring two camps set to get take place in late November and late December, respectively. Additionally, head coach Craig Nicholson has also announced the introduction of monthly mini-camps that will take place throughout the Fall.

2015 Fall Mini-Camps

Campers in Grades 5-12 with all skill levels are welcomed to join the ASU pitching and catching coaches as the program hosts three Fall “mini-camps” beginning in September and running through November.

There will be two mini-camps taking place each month: one focused on pitching and catching and another focused on hitting.  Camp will run for two alternating Mondays per month for September, October, and November.  The pitching/catching camp camp will run from 6-8 p.m. on Sept. 7 and 21 (Camp 1), Oct. 5 and 19 (Camp 2) and November 2 and 23 (Camp 3). The hitting camps will also operate from 6-8 p.m. on Sept. 14 and 28 (Camp 1), Oct. 12 and 26 (Camp 2) and November 16 and 30 (Camp 3).

Campers may be divided into groups by age.  Each camper will receive four hours of instruction during the camp.  Meals will not be provided, so campers should pack adequate snacks and drinks.  A break will be scheduled for hydration and nutrition.  Camp is open to any and all campers that meet the grade requirements.

Pitchers should bring their glove and cleats while catchers should bring their glove, cleats and catchers gear. Those in the hitting camp should bring their bat, helmet, batting gloves and tennis shoes or turfs.

Camp Registration is $125.00 per camper with a $6 registration fee for a total of $131 and each camp will be conducted at Farrington Stadium in Tempe.

2015 Holiday Camps

The annual Sun Devil Softball Thanksgiving camp will get underway on Friday, Nov. 27 and continue through Sunday, Nov. 29 while the annual Holiday Camp will take place starting Monday, Dec. 28 and running through Tuesday, Dec. 30.

The 2015 Sun Devil Softball Holiday All-Skills Camps are designed with developing softball skills and having fun in mind for athletes in Grades 5-12. These camps are all-skills camps featuring hitting, defense, pitching, catching and base running drills with campers offered the opportunity to take part in any of the skill work they choose.

Each of the Sun Devil softball camps will feature three days of instructions and skill-work at Farrington Stadium that includes 15 hours of quality softball skill instruction from some of the best in the game.

The Thanksgiving camp will take place from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.  The Holiday camp will run from 2 p.m. through 7 p.m. on Monday, and 11 a.m. through 4 p.m. on Tuesday and 10 a.m. through 3 p.m. on Wednesday. 

Campers will be divided into groups by age and assigned a Sun Devil softball student-athlete as their camp counselor.  Each group will have the opportunity to scrimmage against campers of similar age in Farrington Stadium.  Each camper will receive 15 hours of instruction during the camp.  Meals will not be provided, so campers should pack adequate food. Regular breaks will be scheduled for hydration and nutrition.  Camp is open to any and all campers that meet the grade requirements.

Registration will be completed online. The camp fee will be $300 with a six dollar registration fee for a grand total of $306 per camp. Payments will be collected online via E-Check or credit card. Registration can be completed via SunDevilSoftballCamps.com.

The parents of each camper will be required to complete parental/guardian consent and release form that releases Arizona State University from any and all liability for any injuries incurred while at the camp that is not due to ASU’s negligence.  It is recommended that all campers be covered by their parent/guardian health/medical insurance where the organized sports exclusion has been removed.  An ASU trainer will be available on-site to tend to any minor injuries that may take place over the course of the camp.  The release does include a medical release in favor of any attending physician. The release will be signed digitally upon completion of online registration.

Softball Skill Work Features:

(PLEASE NOTE: Campers may take part in ANY section of the skill work that is applicable to their position and are NOT required to take part in all drills. A sample of camp drills can be found below.)

-Offensive Drills (swing mechanics, generating power, situational hitting, the short-game, increasing quality at-bats, hitting off of pitchers, etc)

-Defensive Drills (glove work fundamentals, position specific drill work, primary defensive position skill development, secondary defensive position skill devel­opment, increasing throwing velocity & accuracy, situational defense, arm care, etc)

-Catching Drills (catching fundamentals: receiving/framing, blocking, increasing throwing velocity & accuracy, situational defense, building the umpire-catcher & pitcher-catcher in-game relationships, catching for

pitchers during portions of camp)

-Pitching Drills (pitching fundamentals, increasing pitch velocity, mastering the change up, taking pitch movement to the next level, the mental game, pitching to catchers during portions of camp, arm care, etc)

-Base Running Drills (base running fundamentals, situational base running, sliding, etc)

-Other: Question & Answer Sessions with current ASU Student-Athletes & Staff, The Mental Game, The Recruiting Process, etc. 

Items to Bring:

-Bat

-Batting helmet with a facemask

-Batting gloves (optional)

-Fielding glove

-Cleats &/or turf shoes or sneakers (Metal cleats will not be permitted in the batting cages.)

-Catchers should bring their own gear.

-Additional softball equipment: hat/visor, face mask, mouth guard, sunscreen, etc
