TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University women’s soccer player Cali Farquharson was one of 30 student-athletes named as candidates for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate soccer, according to an announcement by the nominating committee on Thursday.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
One of the most accomplished players in the history of the program, Farquharson is currently second on the school’s all-time career list with 37 goals and 86 points. In 2014 Farquharson joined Sun Devil Hall of Famer Stacey Tullock as the only other player in school history to score double-digits in goals three straight seasons after recording scoring a single-season, career-high 14 (had 10 each of her first two seasons). Known for her indefatigable work ethic both on and off the field, Farquharson, who is also fourth on ASU’s all-time list for game winning goals with 11, earned First-Team NSCAA All-Regional and First-Team All-Pac-12 recognition last season. Currently the team leader this season in both goals (3) and points (9), Farquharson has tied the single-game school record for goals (3) twice in her career and she also holds the school record for most consecutive games scoring a goal (8).
Farquharson’s outstanding record of high achievements on the field is also duplicated in the classroom where she maintains a 3.54 GPA while studying Biological Sciences. Last year Farquharson was named a Second-Team Scholar All-American by the NSCAA in addition to being named to the Pac-12’s All-Academic Team for the second consecutive season.
A Valley native (Shadow Mountain HS/Phoenix, Ariz.), Farquharson has maintained a strong presence in the community throughout her career. Last year Farquharson was one of 10 Sun Devil student-athletes who accompanied ASU American Indian students to Hopi and Navajo lands to bring the university to tribal nations, learn about Native cultures and share in healthy activities. In addition, she has also participated in several other service projects, including ‘Fantasy Flight,” an event that takes place during the holidays in several United Airlines cities to help make a Christmas wish come true for children; volunteering at ASU’s annual Pat’s Run; and visiting Phoenix Children’s Hospital to play games and do crafts with the patients.
The current pool of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2015 NCAA Men’s and Women’s College Cup® championships in December.
The Sun Devil soccer team (2-0) returns to action on Friday (7 p.m. at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium) when it hosts Stephen F. Austin at as part of the annual Sun Devil Desert Classic. ASU’s game vs. Stephen F. Austin will be preceded by a contest between Arizona and San Diego State at 4:30 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets in advance by clicking here.
