TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 22 Arizona State women’s soccer team’s game versus San Diego State was cancelled on Monday night after it was determined that the field was not playable following heavy rain.
The game started on time however it was called to a halt after only 15:03 of game time had elapsed due to lightning in the area. The lightning would continue and would eventually be accompanied by heavy rain, which eventually forced the cancellation of the game.
“When we went to look at the field we quickly discovered that it was saturated to the point that the ball would not roll,” said ASU head coach Kevin Boyd. “It was very obvious we could not play and then we looked at the option of playing tomorrow. It was determined that in ideal conditions – no more rain tonight and lots of sunshine tomorrow – that the field would not be ready until much later in the day. At that point there were too many unknowns for us to try and reschedule it for tomorrow.”
Is unlikely that the game will be rescheduled for a later date due to the lack of a date that would fit in the schedule of both teams.
“We both tried to look at something in our schedules and we could not find a day that matched up,” said Boyd. “On the weekends when we have a singe game they have two and on the weekends they have a single game we have two and so it just wasn’t working.”
The Sun Devils return to action on Friday night when they host Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
