TEMPE, Ariz. – Cali Farquharson moved into a tie for second place on ASU’s list for most career goals after scoring a pair in the No. 22 Arizona State women’s soccer team’s 6-0 win over UNLV on Friday night.
Lucy Lara, McKenzie Berryhill, Aly Moon and Adriana Orozco also scored goals for the Sun Devils (2-0), who have outscored their first two opponents 9-0.
Farquharson now has 37 career goals tying her with former Sun Devil Patrice Feulner for the runner-up spot on ASU’s all-time list. The top spot is held by Sun Devil Hall of Famer Stacey Tullock, who found the back of the net 50 times in her career.
Chandler Morris made four saves to record her 21st career shutout and is now within two of tying the school record for most clean sheets in a career.
“What I like is we made some adjustments at halftime in terms of how we were trying to play the game and I thought our second half was significantly better,” ASU head coach Kevin Boyd said following the game. “Even though you look at it and see three goals each half and a shutout each half, in the first half even though it was 3-0 it did not feel like we outplayed them to (get to) 3-0. I thought the game had a lot of turnovers by both sides (in the first half). We just had a couple pretty good goals to be honest. We had six shots and three goals (in the first half) and that is rather rare. In the second half I thought we played well the entire half and I thought we were in control and we really stepped it up.”
It took ASU less than two minutes to gain the advantage in the game as Lara got behind the defense after receiving a pass from Farquharson and put her shot past the keeper for the early 1-0 advantage.
Lara would return the favor in the 22nd minute when she found Farquharson going toward goal. Farquharson took the pass, got into a one-on-one situation and put her shot near post to give ASU a 2-0 advantage.
Farquharson was not done as she struck again a little more than two minutes later to increase ASU’s lead to 3-0.
Madison Stark helped set up ASU’s fourth goal of the game as she was fouled just short of the 18 while making her way toward UNLV’s goal. Farquharson took the free kick and slipped it to Berryhill who scored the fourth goal of her career to put ASU up 4-0.
Larisa Staub would team up with Moon for ASU’s next goal as Staub, with her back to the goal, passed to Moon who was wide open and sent her shot into the net from 15 yards out.
Freshman Adriana Orozco’s goal in the 80th minute finished off ASU’s stellar night of offense, which tied the second-highest, single-game goal total in school history.
The Sun Devils return to action on Monday (7 p.m. PT) when they host San Diego State at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
