TEMPE -- Even though the season has long since ended for the Arizona State University water polo team and another one looms, several squad members have continued to compete at the highest level in tournaments worldwide over the course of the summer.
Sophomore attacker Izabella Chiappini travelled to Shanghai, Toronto and Volos, Greece for three different competitions: The Pan American Games, the FINA World Women’s Junior Water Polo Championship and the FINA World Super League final.
Freshman attacker Viviane Bahia would also play alongside Chiappini for the Brazilian team in the Super League final held in June.
Chiappini earned her place as Brazil’s leading scorer with 18 total goals in the Pan American Games, with the next closest scorer still being six away. She netted at least one goal in four of the five games that would soon help set up Brazil’s spot in the bronze medal match against Cuba.
Chiappini tallied up six goals in the 9-6 victory to help give her team a bronze medal.
She hopes to help Brazil find similar success in the Junior Worlds, which began today. On Day One of the competition, she found the back of the net five times to contribute to the 16-9 win over the New Zealand.
Fellow ASU teammate Lena Mihailovic also scored during opening day for the Australian team, netting two. Incoming freshmen Bente Rogge for the Netherlands, and Rosie Huck for Great Britain, are also in Volos to compete for their respective national teams.
The tournament is ongoing until Aug. 23.
Mihailovic also made an appearance in the World University Games held in Gwangju, Korea this past July. Her penalty shoot out goal against Canada would help Australia take home a gold medal.
