Sun Devil rising Senior Max Rottluff is set to tee it up at this year’s Western Amateur Championship held at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Rottluff is currently ranked the No. 21 Amateur in the world and is a reigning GCAA First Team All-American.
Fellow Sun Devil swinger, Senior Alberto Sanchez will also compete. Sanchez played in 11 tournaments for the Sun Devils this past season, and shot a career-low 66 in the first round of the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate.
Both players will look to become the second Sun Devil in program history to win the Amateur, as “Lefty” Phil Mickelson won the tournament in 1991.
This year’s championship features arguably the strongest field in amateur golf, with five of the world’s top-6 amateur’s competing. Rottluff and Sanchez will be two of the 156 players from 19 countries present.
The Western Amateur offers one of the most intriguing and toughest formats in golf and is composed of both match and stroke play. Competition kicks off tomorrow Tuesday, Aug. 3, with the field of 156 playing 18-holes of individual stroke play. The low-44 competitors will then compete in 36-holes of individual stroke play to determine the top-16 finishers. The champion will be determined on Aug 7-8, with the “Sweet Sixteen” competing in a knockout competition held at match play.
