Sun Devil women’s basketball teammates senior guard Katie Hempen and junior center Quinn Dornstauder will be on opposite sides when the USA takes on Canada in the gold-medal game of the World University Games on Monday.
The USA advanced to the gold-medal game after a hard-fought, 102-98, double-overtime win over Japan in Saturday’s semifinal. Hempen has appeared in three of the USA’s five games thus far and has connected on half of her 3-pointers (2-4).
Canada advanced to the final with a 70-60 win over Russia on Saturday. In Canada’s five wins Dornstauder has averaged 10.6 points and 7.6 rebounds and has contributed a pair of double-doubles: 11 points/14 rebounds vs. Hungary and 16 points/11 rebounds vs. Korea.
Monday’s gold-medal game will be contested at Yeomju Gymnasium in Gwangju, South Korea (6 p.m. local time/2 a.m. in Arizona). The game can be seen on ESPNU/WatchESPN.
Hempen and Dornstauder are two of three Sun Devils participating in international competitions this summer. On Thursday junior Sophie Brunner will be competing for the U.S. Pan American Games team when it begins competition vs. Brazil at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.
