PHOENIX – Jordan Aboites notched 11 strikeouts in his first career start to lead No. 12 Sun Devil Baseball past Abilene Christian, 4-1, in the team’s final regular season home game on Tuesday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Aboites (3-3) held the Wildcats (15-37) scoreless across 6 1/3 innings, his career-long outing, and allowed just five hits as he surpassed his previous career high in strikeouts after the second inning. His only walk came against the last batter he faced with one out in the seventh inning and the runner eventually came home to score for ACU’s only run of the game.
Arizona State closed out its 2015 regular season home schedule with a 25-11 record as a total of 107,010 fans attended Phoenix Muni, the highest regular-season attendance since 2010 and the fourth-highest mark in the past 28 years.
Shortstop Colby Woodmansee scored a pair of runs and went 2-for-4, his 21st multi-hit game of the year, and catcher Zach Cerbo added two hits.
The Sun Devils (33-19) notched three runs on four hits in the bottom of the second to stake Aboites a 3-0 lead. Designated hitter Brian Serven and Woodmansee opened the frame with a single and a double, respectively, and right fielder Trever Allen singled up the middle to put ASU on the scoreboard. Cerbo followed with a double to right field to plate Woodmansee, and the throw back to the infield was mishandled by ACU’s shortstop to allow Allen to score from third.
Woodmansee extended the Devils’ advantage to four in the sixth inning as he singled, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and came home on a sacrifice fly from first baseman Joey Bielek.
Right-hander David Graybill (1) earned his first career save after he took over with two outs in the eighth and recorded four consecutive outs.
ACU starting right-hander Thomas Altimont (3-8) took the loss after he scattered eight hits and allowed four runs, including two earned, in six innings.
