TEMPE, Ariz. – Providing a revised look at the reinvention of Sun Devil Stadium, Arizona State University and Sun Devil Athletics released an updated rendering of the iconic venue from the stadium design team of Gould Evans and HNTB Corporation.
The rendering accurately reflects the design plan for Sun Devil Stadium following the approval of the construction budget by the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) and the hire of Gould Evans/HNTB and the construction team of Hunt/Sundt Construction in August of 2014.
The reinvention of Sun Devil Stadium will feature the “Double Inferno” upgraded student section, enhanced seating and legroom, more restrooms and concession options, technological upgrades, improved air and traffic flow through the venue, a connection to the surrounding landscape, additional premium seating options, and a new video board and sound system, among other new amenities. The design allows for Sun Devil Stadium to be multifunctional, community facility that will host a variety of events year round.
The release of the rendering is a precursor to the highly anticipated Sun Devil Football season ticket renewals kicking off next week. All season ticket holders in non-affected seats can renew their current seating arrangement, while affected season ticket holder accounts will have the first option to select the best seats starting in May through Sun Devil Athletics’ new partnership with Ballena Technologies – a service that uses an online 3D model for seat selection. All season ticket holders, both affected and non-affected, can enroll in a payment plan to ensure the renewal and relocation of their season tickets.
The first of three phases of construction, Phase 1 will create a new student section in the south end zone, removing existing steel bleachers and replacing them with concrete treads and risers and permanent stadium seating. The south end zone section will be complemented by the implementation of a student section in the north end zone, creating what head football coach Todd Graham has coined the “Double Inferno” student sections at both ends of the field, unlike any stadium in the Pac-12.
Phase 1, which will be completed by August 2015, includes the removal of a majority of the existing loge structure in the southwest and southeast corners of the stadium as well as the demolition to the upper deck of the northeast end zone. The area cleared by the removal will be redeveloped in a configuration that is dedicated to students for seating and standing, enhanced concessions, food service, restrooms and dedicated student entrances to the stadium.
Phase 2 work will be conducted on the east and north sides of the stadium in 2016, upon conclusion of the 2015 football season. The Phase 3 work will begin in January of 2017 with work on the west side of the stadium and on the Student Athletics Facility, completing in time for the 2017 football season.
The conceptual rendering released in January of 2014 was created prior to the partnership with Gould Evans and HTNB. Once the budget was finalized and approved by ABOR, the design team was able to create renderings that accurately reflect the design of the updated and upgraded Sun Devil Stadium.
