TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State women’s tennis coach Sheila McInerney announced, today, that Samantha Hampton has signed a letter of intent to study and play tennis for the Sun Devils.
Hampton, a native of Vancouver, Wash., is the top-ranked junior player in the state of Washington and has won three-straight Washington State High School Championships from 2012-14. The Evergreen State has produced top talent in recent years for the Sun Devils with multi-All-American honorees Kelcy McKenna and Jacqueline Cako calling the state home.
"We are thrilled to have Sammi join our tennis program and the ASU family,” McInerney said. “She is one if the top recruits in the country and we feel Sammi’s best tennis is still ahead of her.”
A five-star recruit, Hampton spent the summer competing in national-level tournaments and took home the trophy at the GPTC/Nike Oregon Tennis Championships in July. The Washington native is not only the top-ranked recruit in her state but is also ranked No. 1 in the Northwest region and 44th nationally.
“Sammi will fit in nicely and excel academically and athletically,” said McInerney. “She is an excellent athlete and will be a lot of fun to work with these next four years.”
Alluding to her ability to immediately impact the team, McInerney jokes, “August can't come soon enough!”
