TEMPE -- The 2014 Capital One Academic All-District® Softball Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom and three members of the Arizona State University softball team were honored with a selection in District 8.

Bailey Wigness, Amber Freeman and Elizabeth Caporuscio were all recognized as First Team selections for District 8, which represents schools located in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawai’I, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Canada.

The three selections were the most of by any school in District 8 and trails only Alabama and Tennessee’s four selections for the most selections in the nation. Oregon’s Cheridan Hawkins and Stanford’s Hanna Winter were the only other selections made from the Pac-12.

Wigness is the reigning NCAA Elite 89 Award winner, given annually to the student-athlete with the highest GPA at an NCAA Championship event.  The senior outfielder carries a 4.0 GPA with a double major in political science and communications, all while solidifying herself as one of the most efficient hitters in ASU history. This is the third CoSIDA All-District selection.

Wigness lays claim to a .375 career batting average, which would be good for sixth in ASU history should the season end today. She is batting a solid .355 this season and leads the team with 12 steals.

For juniors Freeman and Caporuscio, Thursday’s announcement marks the first time either player has earned All-District accolades.

Freeman, the defending Pac-12 Player of the Year, boasts a 3.43 GPA in health sciences while Caporuscio lays claim to a 3.38 GPA in environmental sciences.

The two have been among ASU’s most prolific offense threats this season as Freeman is well on her way to a batting average over .400 on the season for the first time in her career while Caporuscio has consistently been in the top four in batting average all season and leads the team with 15 doubles on the year – a new career high.

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
