BERKELEY, Calif.—In head coach John Spini’s final conference championship meet, the Arizona State women’s gymnastics team finished in seventh place at 2014 Pac-12 Championships, Saturday, in Berkeley, Calif. Going head-to-head with California in the second session, the Sun Devils had to count a fall on bars in the final rotation to finish with a team total of 195.500.
The Sun Devils lit up floor in the second session recording a team total of 49.250, just five hundredths shy of their season high. ASU’s team total was the second-best of the day behind Pac-12 Champion Utah, who scored a near-perfect 49.650. Junior Natasha Sundby scored a 9.900 to finish in fifth in the conference.
Arizona State also fired on all cylinders on vault with consistency being the key to the team’s season high total of 49.150. The Sun Devils counted three scores of 9.850 and had the benefit of dropping a 9.700 as the low score of the event.
Despite being plagued by bobbles, all six ASU gymnasts stayed on the beam and hit their routines. Sophomore Stephanie Miceli led Arizona State with a score of 9.875 on beam to finish ninth overall. The Sun Devils were penalized for the wobbles earning a team total of 48.625.
With the second session still very much in contention, Arizona State finished out the meet on bars. Strong performances by Risa Perez, Beka Conrad and Carissa Kraus were not enough to overcome a second fall on the event. Having to count a fall on bars left the second-session victory out of reach for the Sun Devils.
In her third meet competing in the all-around, Conrad, a freshman, bested her previous career high by almost three-tenths with an overall score of 39.200.
The Sun Devils will learn their postseason Regional destination on Monday when the NCAA announces the 36 teams that will go on to compete for a national championship.
